Martin Isherwood - Head of Discipline
Martin has over 20 years experience working in the music industry as a performer, writer producer, sound engineer, DJ, manager and promoter. As a songwriter and producer he won the BBC Song For Europe 2003. He is a board member of the Merseyside Music Development Agency and has a MA in Compositional Studies at Salford University.
Arthur Bernstein - Senior Lecturer
Arthur has worked as a professional musician, guitarist and bassist; co-founded L'Aula de Musica Moderna y Jazz in Barcelona. He has provided advice and consultancy to the European Commission, The European Music Office, L'Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya, The Berklee International Network and the Educational Department of the Gabierno de Navarra. He has also assisted the European Modern Music Education Network (EMMEN) and the US-based Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association.
Clare Canty - Guest Lecturer
Clare started singing professionally while still at Salford University and has had many years experience as a gigging musician on the jazz circuit. She has worked as a studio session singer, live backing vocalist, radio DJ, and fronted Manchester dance act Lucid. With them she had worldwide record releases and the international dance music hit 'I Can't Help Myself' on DJ Pete Tong's London ffrr label.
Clare has taught singing to individuals and groups of all ages for more than 10 years. From songwriting workshops for primary school rappers to the LIPA a capella choir, Clare has a broad experience in music education and is one of just a handful of SLS (Speech Level Singing) qualified teachers in the UK. Outside of LIPA, Clare continues her own education in SLS and is a gigging, writing, and recording artist in her own right.
Helen Davies - Administrator/Visiting Lecturer
Helen has a MA in Popular Music Studies (distinction) from the University of Liverpool and is currently undertaking a MPhil in Music. Her current research is an ethnographic study of popular music in the daily lives of young teenagers, which she hopes to develop into a PhD by 2008. As well as teaching the Contextual Studies module at LIPA, Helen is a daily point of contact within the music department for students, staff and the public.
Mat Flynn - Lecturer
Mat is the owner manager of independent record label Honey Records based in Liverpool, which continually releases material from new talent. Mat has written a series of 'how to do' guides for the Merseyside Music Development Agency, aimed to help up and coming musicians and music practitioners. He is currently completing a MA in Music Industries from the University of Liverpool. Mat played an important role in the New Deal for Musicians programme at LIPA before becoming a full-time Music lecturer at LIPA in September 2006.
Eddie Lundon - Lecturer
Eddie is a professional musician and founding member of legendary Liverpool rock group 'China Crisis', who have sold over seven million albums worldwide, each attaining gold and silver status. Eddie was influential in the success of the New Deal for Musicians course at LIPA before becoming a full-time lecturer at LIPA.
Keith Mullin - Lecturer
Keith Mullin is a professional musician and a member of pop group 'The Farm' who had a number one album, 3 top ten singles and five top twenty songs in the early 1990s. Keith established independent label Produce Records, successfully releasing and marketing The Farm's music until they signed with Sony in the UK and Asia and Warner in America.
Keith currently owns and co-manages independent record label Honey Records and has 25 years of experience in the music business and is still a practising professional.
Keith teaches on the music degree and has responsibility for various modules and subsequently operates several initiatives that link education to industry. In 2008 Keith acted as a consultant and advisor on a range of local projects for the Capital of Culture and ran several events at Sound City.
Keith completed a PG Cert LTHE in 2008, gaining a Distinction award after completion of an MA in Music Industry Studies in 2006. Subsequently, the PG Cert LTHE research was published in April 2009, in the 'Innovations in Practice Journa'l at LJMU.
Tim Pike - Senior Lecturer
Tim worked as a bass guitarist with bands performing original and extant jazz, funk and pop and has also recorded commercial session work in London studios. He has performed and toured in theatre pit gigs for both professional and amateur shows on bass guitar, double bass, oboe and saxophone. He has also performed orchestral gigs on double bass and oboe. He has used music technology to compose, arrange and record and also has a MA.
We employ over 20 music industry professionals to deliver much of the vocal, instrumental and ensemble tuition, including some of the country’s top jazz musicians.
