The tortured author Jean Rhys was obsessed with the novel Jane Eyre – but more particularly with the character Bertha Mason, the first Mrs Rochester and the ‘madwoman in the attic’.

Placing Bertha on stage throughout as Jean’s alter ego, playwright Polly Teale’s remarkable dramatisation of Rhys’s life gives full vent to this obsession – which was to prove the catalyst for The Wide Sargasso Sea. Shared Experience’s original production of After Mrs Rochester, which was directed by Polly Teale, attracted great critical acclaim and won the Time Out award for Best West End Production.

A play by Polly Teale
