Learning Services - Collections Information - Compact Discs

The CD collection is one of the largest in the LRC - it contains almost 7,000 CDs. The collection is growing continuously, as Warner and SonyBMG donate new CDs regularly. A wide range of music types is represented in the collection, including sampling and sound effects. The collection is linked closely with music scores - we aim to have a corresponding CD for each score held in the LRC. We also have small collections of audio cassettes and LP records, which are shelved after the CDs.

Where is it?

  • The CD collection is downstairs in the LRC.
  • It is classified in the same way as the books - using the Dewey Decimal system.
  • It starts with sampling CDs at 621.3893 and ends with sound effects / library music at 792.024.

Borrowing

  • Use the LRC IPACs to search for an artist, album or song:
  • For a CD title - use Title Alphabetical
  • For a song title - use Title Keyword
  • For an artist or group - use Author Alphabetical; also Title Keyword - to find artists on compilation CDs.
  • Most of the CDs are kept in security cases.
  • Most CDs can be borrowed for 7 days.
  • Make sure the CD is in the case before you return it.
  • Make sure the right CD is in the case...
  • Make sure all accompanying inserts are returned with the CD - a charge of £5 will be made for missing inner sleeves, booklets, or cases.
  • If you lose a CD, you can either buy a replacement for the LRC, or pay the LRC the replacement cost.
  • Please do not damage the CD or case when it is in your care.
  • If a CD you have borrowed is faulty, tell a member of LRC staff when you return it.

Listening

  • You can listen to CDs, cassettes and LPs in the LRC.
  • Ask at the Issue Desk for the security case to be removed. The item will be issued to you, so you need to return it to the desk and have it checked in when you have finished with it.
