All about BOBCOM
Posted on: Nov 02, 2011

Hi! I’m Tom Satchwell, a 2nd year BA (Hons) Music, Theatre and Entertainment Management student.  I will be posting monthly about my life as a LIPA student, as well as all the extra curricular activities I get up to around Liverpool as part of my degree course.

For my first post I thought I’d just ease into it by talking about a project I am working on as part of my course. The project is called “The 2ube” and is based on the idea of the 1980s music television show “The Tube” which was hosted by Jools Holland and Paula Yates. Essentially it was a showcase for up and coming artists, and in some cases was the turning point in some artist’s careers. The 2ube (note the 2 not “T” because we’re all hip and cool) follows the same format, however, weekly LIPA artists and bands take to the stage, in a fully produced and professional gig. It is entirely student led, so sound techs and LX are all LIPA students, with our Music, Theatre and Entertainment Management students taking on the responsibility of marketing, programming and promoting The 2ube to a wider audience.

On the last Friday of each month, The 2ube is streamed live to a hosting site by a company called BOBCOM. BOBCOM come into LIPA each month and we collaborate with them to run it as a fully fledged broadcast which goes out live via their website. It’s hosted by BBC Merseyside DJ Dave Monks and Rosa Murdoch (a 3rd year LIPA musician) who interview the bands live for the stream (if you ever watch ‘Later, with Jools Holland’ the format is quite similar to that).

The thing which is special about the BOBCOM events is that as well as showcasing LIPA musicians; we also bring in big name artists. The first one was held last Friday (28th October), and our headline act was Pearl and the Puppets, an up and coming Glaswegian band.

The 2ube is a great opportunity for everyone who is working on it - from the musicians who are performing live, to everyone who is working behind the scenes to make it happen. Excitingly, it has already gained the interest of a few festival producers and radio reps!

The 2ube and BOBCOM events are open to the public every Friday from 5pm-7pm and is streamed via the BOBCOM website on the last Friday of each month. If you'd like to see the most recent episode, which was streamed live on 28th October, just click on the video below. And if you’re around LIPA on a Friday evening then pop in and see what the crack is -  you’re sure not to be disappointed!
