‘World Capital of Pop’

Echo Arena

Liverpool is acknowledged by The Guinness Book of Hit Singles as ‘World Capital of Pop’ for producing more number one hit singles than any other city around the globe.

Well known for its music scene, Liverpool offers a plethora of live music venues that range in size from small intimate venues (like the world famous Cavern Club and the student-friendly Kazimier) to a new 10,600 seater arena: The Echo Arena. A world class venue for international acts and bands, this is the perfect place to see some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

In its opening year of 2008, it welcomed Oasis, Pussycat Dolls and Coldplay to the stage as well as hosting the MTV Europe Awards, where some of our students performed.

For classical aficionados, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic is a must. Concerts at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall include full-blown orchestral pieces and an incredible range of symphonic concerts, played by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. But the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall also has visiting performances by leading world music and contemporary artists, performances by the RLPO choir and evenings with the award-winning contemporary ensemble 10/10.

Mathew Street Festival

Liverpool lays on a whole host of fabulous musical events and live festivals each year to celebrate its rich musical heritage.

There is the Mathew Street Festival, a celebration of free, live rock and pop music that takes place in and around Mathew Street every summer Bank Holiday weekend and attracts over 300,000 people.

The Mathew Street Festival is staged at the end of International Beatle Week, one of the biggest music events in the world, which features bands from around the world. International Beatle Week has live gigs taking place all over the city as well as memorabilia sales, guest speakers and even sightseeing tours.

Taking place in May every year, Liverpool Sound City is another fab festival of bands, DJs and artists as well as largest live music festival and conference in the North of the UK.
