Student Services

Rob Hughes, LIPA Learner Support Manager

Whether you come straight from school, a year or two later or as a mature student, we aim to make you feel welcome and to help you adjust to your new college life here as quickly as possible.

We also aim to ensure that you have the support and guidance you need throughout your time with us.

With a total of 680 students, we are a small institution, which means we can get to know you as individuals.

Student Support Manager

Our dedicated Student Support Manager offers advice and information about a wide range of issues related to your support needs (personal and educational), health and welfare. Our Student Support Manager can be approached before you begin your studies or at any time during your course. He is able to provide guidance on the Disabled Student’s Allowance, accessible student accommodation and a wide range of other services and opportunities if you are disabled.

Building Accessibility

During the rebuilding of the former Liverpool Institute for Boys, we wanted to make the building as accessible as possible, particularly to the needs of disabled and deaf students.

Corridors are broad and wheelchair users can access all levels of the building. There are easy-access toilets throughout.

The Paul McCartney Auditorium and the Sennheiser Studio Theatre have a Sennheiser infra-red system for those with hearing impairments.

There are portable hearing loop systems for use in classes and we have installed induction loops at all our main counter-service locations.

If you have visual impairments, we have colour contrast around pillars and other potential hazards throughout the building and contrasting nosing on both internal and external stairs.

Specialist ICT support

Specialist ICT support is in place too. This includes voice-activated MS Office software, JAWS screen reading software, keyboard guards, trackballs and larger monitors. We have a text enlarger, a flatbed scanner and reading software, allowing conversion to Braille for visually impaired students.

Specialist music resources include 4-beam Soundbeam music system and portable PC with MIDI capability.
