Will Young visited LIPA in November to give a song delivery masterclass to a packed audience of students and staff.
The original Pop Idol, in Liverpool for a concert at the Empire Theatre, spent nearly an hour and a half listening to student acts and working with them to fine-tune their performances.
One of the afternoon’s musicians, a female vocalist, summed up the mood of those on stage in the Paul McCartney Auditorium, while working with Will: “I can’t believe you’re listening to me and I’m not listening to you!”
The line-up of performers included a soloist, pop outfits and guitar-based acts.
Will focused on areas such as microphone technique, mixing levels, stage presence, breathing, diction, lyrics and audience involvement. He also offered advice on the importance of connecting with the audience.
“The mic is your friend,” declared Will when giving feedback to one singer. “When I get on stage or have a bad day, that connection between the mic and the singer is amazing. It’s a relationship you can’t have with anyone else.”
Will rose to fame after entering the original series of Pop Idol in 2002, which he went on to win. His single Evergreen, launched on the back of the hit television show, is still the best selling single of this decade. Will has gone on to sell over 8 million records and recently released his highly anticipated The Hits - a collection of all his best known singles to date.
