With a focus on Jazz and Stage.
The course is for dancers with experience (with or without formal dance qualifications), who wish to develop their skills in jazz and stage dance. It is also suitable for dancers, who wish to maintain their physical fitness and performance. Each session starts with a warm-up, followed by a series of exercises and dance sequences designed to develop dance technique and performance. The classes are physically demanding and intense. The last section of each session is dedicated to cooling down. Health and safety awareness and the prevention of injury are central to the course. The course explores and develops dance and movement fundamentals, including alignment/placement/centre/use of spine etc and body basics: control, extension, flexion, strength, clarity and precision, time, weight and space, gravity, energy, use of breath, dynamics and use of space.
Entry requirements
We welcome individuals over the age of 18. You must have experience of dance and be physically fit and able to undertake three hours of intensive dance classes from week one. Experience of jazz and commercial dance is not essential but would be highly desirable. If you are aged between 18 and 21, you should have studied a Level 3 qualification (such as A-Levels or BTEC National Diploma) but we don't specify subjects or grades. If you are over 21 and have not studied a Level 3 qualification, we would expect you to have some recent dance experience. You are generally expected to take part in an audition. Click here for audition dates.
Whilst students are welcome to take both dance courses they will only be awarded one Certificate in Professional Development at the end of both courses instead of two Certificates.
