This is an industry specific business skills development course aimed at providing an overview of the creative, organisational and business structures used in the music industry. It is led by Peter Hooton, who was a founder member and lead singer of The Farm. The course is delivered through a lecture programme, supported by seminars and individual tutorials. The course explores: the business and creative structure of the music industry, both within the UK and internationally; the specific functions of individual business components of the music industry and the principal issues relating to intellectual property, contracts, copyright and royalties. This is a practical course, which provides you with much of the knowledge and understanding required for developing a career or enterprise in the music business. The teaching is heavily reliant on case studies and you have the opportunity to develop your own projects and ideas, which will be the primary form of assessment.

Entry requirements

We welcome individuals over the age of 18. You need to be willing to fully engage with the subject and work and learn collaboratively. If you are aged between 18 and 21, you should have studied a Level 3 qualification (such as A-Levels or BTEC National Diploma) but we don't specify which subjects or grades. If you are over 21 and have not studied a Level 3 qualification, we would expect you to have recent music experience. You will usually be selected on the basis of your application form.
